Infection Prevention & Control Topic: Water Management
Legionella Prevention & Control Webinar
This is a webinar intended for infection preventionists in Virginia, that provides information that can be valuable to infection preventionists in other states. It reviews the natural history of Legionella infections, how to reduce the risk, how to diagnose cases, and how to remediate if surveillance testing or cases occur.
Legionella Environmental Assessment Form (LEAF)
This fillable form can be used to document a facility’s water systems, help determine whether to conduct Legionella environmental sampling, and, if so, develop a sampling plan. An accompanying guide provides instructions and additional considerations for using the fillable form. The guide helps the evaluation team to understand form questions and also more fully assess potential risks in the facility’s water system. The form is available at: https://www.cdc.gov/legionella/downloads/legionella-environmental-assessment-marking-guide-508.pdf
Sampling Procedure and Potential Sampling Sites
This protocol describes how a facility that is assessing Legionella risk should take standard biofilm swab, bulk water, and filter samples from commonly sampled sites. It accompanies other tools (a sampling data sheet, an environmental assessment form, and instructional videos that can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/legionella/health-depts/environmental-inv-resources.html
Sample Data Sheet (for Legionella sampling)
This one page data sheet can be used to record samples taken as a facility conducts a Legionella environmental sampling. The form follows the guidance from the accompanying sampling procedure (available at: https://www.cdc.gov/legionella/downloads/cdc-sampling-procedure.pdf).
Sampling/Environmental Assessment Videos (for Legionella sampling)
This series of six videos was designed to help with the environmental aspects of Legionnaires’ disease outbreak investigations. They include information conducting environmental assessments, developing sample plans, and sampling different potential sources.
Toolkit for Controlling Legionella in Common Sources of Exposure
This is a 27 page toolkit for Controlling Legionella in Common Sources of Exposure (Legionella Control Toolkit) provides public health and building owners and operators with concise, actionable information on controlling Legionella in commonly implicated sources of Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks. It helps focus and improve Legionella control efforts and protect the safety of a building’s employees, visitors, and surrounding community.
Developing a Water Management Program to Reduce Legionella Growth & Spread in Buildings
This 36-page toolkit is designed to help a facility develop and implement a water management program to reduce a building’s risk for growing and spreading Legionella. Included are practical resources to help ensure that a water management program is comprehensive, effective, and in line with industry standards. This toolkit also highlights special considerations for healthcare facilities.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Long Term Care (LTC) Infection Control Worksheet LTC Facility Self-Assessment Tool
This is a 18 page worksheet/checklist that can be used by long term care facilities as a self-assessment tool. It comprises both regulatory requirements and best practices in infection prevention and control. A facility that uses this ICWS will identify gaps in practice and have a “roadmap” that can lead to an improved infection prevention and control program.
