(RICHMOND, Va.)—  The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) announced today that vaccination data for children ages 5-11 has been added to the Vaccine Demographics Dashboard.

Vaccination count for the 5-11 age group has been added to the dashboard along with the percentage of the population with at least one dose by age group. The updated dashboard also gives total vaccinations and percentages for people ages 5-17, 5-plus, 18-plus and 65-plus. The dashboard is updated daily.

“So far, we’ve seen high interest among parents of young children who want to get them protected from COVID-19. This is an important step in keeping our children safe from severe disease. It also helps decrease disruptions at school because children won’t have to be pulled out of classes for quarantine if they are fully vaccinated,” said Virginia’s state vaccination liaison Dr. Danny Avula, MD, MPH.

There are about 723,000 children ages 5-11 who became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine upon approval on November 2 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for that age group. As of November 10, 35,227 children have received their first dose of the vaccine.

In Virginia, 11,900,269 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered, 84% of adults have had at least one dose of vaccine and 75.5% of adults are fully vaccinated.

VDH’s top priority is to increase vaccination rates in Virginia because those who are unvaccinated remain at the highest risk of severe illness and hospitalization due to COVID-19. Everyone 5 years or older is eligible to be vaccinated.

At this time appointments are required for vaccinations for children ages 5-11, except at:

  • Military Circle Mall in Norfolk
  • Sears at Valley View Mall in Roanoke

While appointments are encouraged for adults, Community Vaccination Centers do accept walk-ins.
