Cumberland Plateau Health District Lifts Recreational Water Advisory for the Levisa River and Slate Creek
Public may resume recreational activities in the waterway

LEBANON, Va.- Effectively immediately, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) lifts the advisory for the Levisa River from 0.5 miles east of Anchorage Shopping Center along U.S. HWY 460 to the Kentucky state line and portions of Slate Creek from the Buchanan County Department of Social Services on Route 83 downstream to the Levisa River in Buchanan County.

The advisory was issued March 20, 2025, due to an ongoing sewage overflow from sewer mains that were damaged by flooding. Repairs have been completed and full flow has been restored to the sewage system. Buchanan County Public Service Authority collected E. coli samples from the area, and the analyses indicate bacterial levels in the Levisa River are at or below historic levels.
