First Death in Virginia from Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) Associated with COVID-19 Reported

On Friday, November 26, The Virginia Department of Health confirmed a death from Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19. This is the first death from MIS-C reported in Virginia. The child was between 10 and 19 years old and resided in the Prince William Health District. To protect privacy and out of respect for the family, no other patient information was disclosed.

MIS-C, previously called Pediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome, is a health condition associated with COVID-19. The first reports of this syndrome came from the United Kingdom in late April 2020. U.S. cases were first reported in New York City in early May of 2020. Virginia has reported 111 cases to date.

MIS-C may cause problems with a child’s heart, lungs, kidneys and other organs. Most children with MIS-C have an ongoing fever, plus more than one of the following: stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, skin rash, bloodshot eyes, and dizziness or lightheadedness.

Parents should go to the nearest hospital/emergency room for medical care if a child is showing any severe MIS-C warning signs such as trouble breathing, pain or pressure in the chest that does not go away; confusion or unusual behavior; severe abdominal pain; inability to wake or stay awake; or pale, gray or blue-colored skin, lips or nail beds, depending on skin tone.

The CDC issued a Health Advisory on May 14, 2020, about the syndrome. It is not currently known how common it may be for children to experience these symptoms. For more information on MIS-C, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov/mis/.

• At Manassas Mall, vaccines for 5 to 11-year-olds will be offered Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, by appointment only.

Mall Clinic Hours:

• Monday: 12 pm to 4 pm (walk-ins accepted for 12 years and older, vaccines offered: Pfizer and Moderna). By appointment only, Pfizer 5 to 11-year-old vaccinations. The Flu vaccine will be offered while supplies last.

• Tuesday: 10 am to 6 pm (clinic closed 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm, walk-ins accepted for 12 years and older from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm, vaccines offered: Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson). By appointment only Pfizer 5 to 11-year-old vaccinations.

Preparing Children and Teens for Vaccination

• Talk to your child before vaccination about what to expect.
• It is not recommended you give pain relievers before vaccination to try to prevent side effects.
• Tell the doctor or nurse about any allergies your child may have.
• To prevent fainting and injuries related to fainting, your child should be seated or lying down during vaccination for 15 minutes after the vaccine is given.
• After your child’s COVID-19 vaccination, you will be asked to stay for 15–30 minutes so your child can be observed in case they have a severe allergic reaction and need immediate treatment.
Your child may have some side effects, which are normal signs that their body is building protection.
• On the arm where your child got the shot:
o Pain
o Redness
o Swelling
• Throughout the rest of the body:
o Tiredness
o Headache
o Muscle Pain
o Chills
o Fever
o Nausea
Ask your child’s healthcare provider for advice on using a non-aspirin pain reliever and other steps you can take at home after your child gets vaccinated. In general, aspirin is not recommended for use in children and adolescents less than 18 years of age. Placing a cool, damp cloth on the injection site can help with discomfort.

COVID-19 vaccines are giving Americans hope after a long, dark, and deadly year. The Prince William Health District put together some important vaccine information for you.

When the COVID-19 vaccine first rolled out, the supply was limited.  

That prompted the decision to target the most vulnerable with the limited supply—healthcare personnel, who are working on the frontlines in the COVID battle and nursing home residents and staff.

The elderly are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.  According to the New York Times, as of Dec. 4, 2020, 49-percent of Virginia COVID deaths were in long-term care facilities.

COVID-19 vaccine supply will increase.
Possibly in the summer or spring, anyone who wants a vaccination may have their chance.

Safety of COVID-19 vaccines is a major priority.

The U.S. vaccine approval system works to ensure vaccines are as safe as possible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has developed a new tool, V-safe, a smartphone-based app to track vaccine side effects.

It is normal to have side effects from the vaccine.

It is a sign your body is building protection against the virus.

Even after getting a COVID-19 vaccine, you will still need to wear a face mask.

Stopping this pandemic means using all of the safety tools that are available. That means wearing masks, social distancing and washing your hands frequently.

COVID-19 vaccines help protect against the virus, but two shots are needed.

You need both to get the maximum protection against the virus.
