pregnancy-outcomes

These figures represent Pregnancy counts and Pregnancy rates by residency within the Commonwealth and City/County level for Virginia.  The number of Pregnancies is calculated as the sum of Live Births, Induced Termination of Pregnancies (ITOP), and Spontaneous Fetal Deaths.  Rates specific to the Pregnancy rate are derived from the number of Pregnancies, per 1,000 females aged 15-44 residing in the specified geographic area.  Additionally, Virginia tabulates and collects data on Live Births, Induced Termination of Pregnancies(ITOP), as well as Spontaneous Fetal Deaths as individual vital events.  Rates are calculated by the count of the specific vital event per 1,000 females aged 15-44 residing in the specified geographic area.

Virginia uses the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Bridged-Race Postcensal population estimates.  According to the CDC, “Postcensal population estimates are estimates made for the years following a census, before the next census has been taken. Postcensal estimates are derived by updating the resident population enumerated in the decennial census using various measures of population change”.[1] For more information on population projection methodology please visit the CDC website.  For detailed Information on specific Virginia population projections please visit Virginia Geographic and Population Information.  Furthermore, Virginia follows the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) guidelines when classifying Race and Ethnicity.  For more information on Bridged-Race and Ethnicity please visit the NCHS website.
