Safety Seat Program
The Safety Seat Program is a statewide child safety seat distribution and education program and is offered free of charge to eligible families.
Eligibility
To qualify for a free child safety seat or booster, applicants must be:
- Eligible for WIC, Medicaid or FAMIS
- A resident of Virginia – Western Tidewater Health District (Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Franklin or Southampton County)
- A custodial parent, legal guardian, or foster parent of a child who is seven years old or younger, or at least in the last trimester of pregnancy and whose child fits within the program’s safety seat manufacturer’s guidelines
- Attend a safety seat class in its entirety
- Sign a waiver of liability release form
Application
To start the process for a free car seat, fill out an application.
- Application must be completed in its entirety – signed and dated (for multiple car seat requests, a separate application for each child receiving the car seat must be
filled out) - Attach the following information to be considered
- Picture ID (ID Card or Driver’s License)
- WIC/Medicaid Card (Mothers ONLY)
- Legal documents if you’re a foster parent or legal guardian
