The Norfolk Medical Reserve Corps (NMRC) is housed under the authority of the Norfolk Health Department and works in conjunction with public health and other government and nonprofit organizations to protect and improve the health of the Norfolk community. We are a group of volunteer healthcare professionals and non-medical support staff of all backgrounds/licensures who are trained to respond and assist in emergencies as needed and to otherwise augment local public health needs.
Mission: The mission of the Norfolk Medical Reserve Corps (NMRC) is to organize and train local medical, health and community volunteers to support and/or supplement existing medical emergency and public health response efforts in the City of Norfolk.
Vision: The heart of the Norfolk Medical Reserve Corps is our vision to be actively involved in creating and maintaining a healthy community through volunteer energy, initiative, expertise and leadership.
Everyone Has a Role
Everyone has a role to play in the Norfolk Medical Reserve Corps!
Many different skill sets are needed to serve in Public Health and during emergencies.
- Medical professionals, such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, mental health counselors, and others can support a wide array of medical needs.
- Non-medical support personnel help to support the overall response and/or daily unit activities, including assisting clients with paperwork, administrative tasks, event registration, promotion of community health events, interpreter services, logistical support, communications, and more.
Membership Requirements
Membership in the Norfolk Medical Reserve Corps starts with an application. The application is easy and takes less than 30 minutes to complete online. Start the application process.
Once your application has been submitted, the Coordinator approves it and you begin receiving information on training.
Membership requirements include completion of the liability, HIPAA and criminal background check information, which the coordinator will review with you.
Training requirements include volunteer orientation and initial training.
Additional training opportunities are available throughout the year on a variety of topics for personal development and interest. These trainings are optional and may focus on a particular licensure or skill area. Exercises are also available and provide an excellent opportunity for MRC volunteers to see the response system in action, sharpen their personal skills, and meet others in the response community.
