Peninsula Health Center Moves to Newly Renovated Building
Transition improves access to quality health services for the Peninsula community
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health, in partnership with Riverside Health System. (“RHS”) and the City of Newport News, is pleased to announce the official move of the Peninsula Health Center (“PHC”) from 416 J Clyde Morris Blvd. Newport News, Virginia, to the former Stratford University Building at 836 J Clyde Morris Blvd. Newport News, Virginia, located in Newport Square Shoppes.
In 2021, Newport News City Council voted to exchange the existing PHC building for the former Stratford University building, in partnership with Riverside, to relocate the PHC. At the new location, the PHC will continue to provide the following:
- AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Program (PrEP)
- Business Office Administrative Services (Budget/Finance, Procurement and General Services, Facilities, Information Technology, Housekeeping, Security, Fleet Management)
- Children’s Services (Pack-n-Play and Car Seat Education)
- Community Health Nursing Services (Long Term Care, Refugee, Tuberculosis, Lead Exposure)
- Clinical Services (Family Planning/Sexually Transmitted Investigations, Cervical Cancer Screenings and Immunizations)
- Eligibility Services
- Emergency Preparedness & Response (EP&R)
- Environmental Health
- Epidemiology (Infectious Disease Surveillance and Investigation)
- Internship Program
- Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)
- Population Health (Community Outreach Programs and Initiatives such as Project Lead Substance Use and Opioid Response, and COVID-19 Strike Team and Vaccinations)
- Vital Records
- Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
Dr. Natasha Dwamena, health district director for both the Hampton & Peninsula Health Districts (HPHD), says, “Our staff look forward to their new home in the Peninsula Health Center. We believe the move will facilitate streamlined services and allow us become a hub of public health resources and programs for the Peninsula community.”
The new PHC is adjacent to I-64, and more centrally located to the Peninsula communities it serves in the Cities of: Newport News, Poquoson and Williamsburg, and the Counties of: James City County and York County.
“As the needs of our community changed, it became imperative that the Peninsula Health Center relocate to ensure residents have access to critical and life-saving services,” said Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones. “Thousands of individuals from throughout the Virginia Peninsula will benefit from this central location and the quality programs offered at the new facility. The City of Newport News looks forward to continuing to work with the Peninsula Health Center and Riverside Health System to promote health equity, accessibility, and positive outcomes for residents of all ages and backgrounds.”
Riverside leadership shares the sentiment of Newport News Mayor Jones, as well.
“We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with the City of Newport News and the Virginia Department of Health,” says Mike Doucette, vice president, Support Services, Riverside Health System. “We know that this move will greatly benefit patients, visitors, and team members of Riverside as well as HPHD.”
The PHC is striving to meet the ongoing needs of the public and will be relocating its staff in phases to ensure continuation of services to the community. The first phased move will take place on September 14, 15, and 18, and the second phased move will take place on September 28, 29, and October 2. On these days, phone lines and computers will be moved to the new location, so please expect a brief disruption of services or delays in response. The PHC thanks the community for their flexibility and patience during this transition.
Information regarding temporary closure of PHC clinics and services is provided below.
Phase I Move: September 14, 15, and 18:
WIC
- CLOSED on Thursday, September 14, Friday, September 15, and Monday, September 18
- OPEN Tuesday, September 19, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the new PHC (836 J Clyde Morris Blvd.)
Phase II Move: September 28, 29, and October 2:
All services in the Phase II move will be open to the public on Thursday, September 14, Friday, September 15, and Monday, September 18, at the previous PHC location (416 J Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, Virginia).
Clinical Services – COVID-19, Family Planning/STI, Immunizations, and TB
**Additionally, Clinic Services are closed on Tuesday, October 3 and the morning of Wednesday, October 4**
- CLOSED on Thursday, September 28, Friday, September 29, Monday, October 2, Tuesday, October 3, and the morning of Wednesday, October 4
- OPEN on Wednesday, October 4, 12 p.m. -5 p.m. at the new PHC location (836 J Clyde Morris Blvd.)

Environmental Health
- CLOSED until later date, TBD. All PHC Environmental Health walk-in customers will have an option for in-person services at two alternate locations:
- Hampton Health Department, located at 3130 Victoria Boulevard, Hampton, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
- James City County-Williamsburg Health Department, located at 5300 Palmer Lane, Williamsburg, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Payments can be made in person at both alternate locations, or alternatively, credit card payments can be made via phone at (757) 594-7481
