Virginia Department of Health Closes a Portion of Monroe Bay and Rosier Creek to Shellfish Harvesting

RICHMOND, Va.— The Virginia Department of Health announced today that Monroe Bay including Mattox Creek in Westmoreland County and Rosier Creek in King George and Westmoreland Counties are closed to shellfish harvesting due to sewage releases.  Because these waters can be contaminated with pollutants such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses, shellfish taken from the area affected by the emergency closure are currently unacceptable for consumption.  The temporary emergency closure is set to be effective from December 18, 2023, through January 7, 2024. more>>

Mount Rogers Health District Launces Helpline to Assist Community Spanish Speakers

MARION, Va. – The Mount Rogers Health District has launched a helpline for those members of the community who are fluent in Spanish. The health district’s bilingual staff members will be available via the dedicated phone line to answer questions, schedule appointments, or assist with a variety of other public health services. Hours of operation for the helpline will be 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Mount Rogers community can access the service by calling 276-238-6105. more>>

Lake Anna Harmful Algae Bloom Advisory Lifted for Middle North Anna Branch

RICHMOND, Va. – Effective immediately, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is lifting the harmful algae bloom (HAB) advisory for the Middle North Anna Branch of Lake Anna in Louisa County. However, the HAB advisory for the Upper North Anna and Upper Pamunkey branches remains in effect. Central Virginia Health District Conducting Long COVID Study

LYNCHBURG, Va. –  The Central Virginia Health District is conducting research about Long COVID and its impact on our community. Long COVID is when a person is still sick many months after getting COVID-19. Symptoms can include trouble breathing, a cough, feeling weak and tired, and problems with certain organs, such as their heart or kidneys. We want to learn about any long-term effects that people might have two or more months after a COVID-19 infection. You do not have to have a diagnosis of Long COVID to participate. more>>

Harmful Algae Bloom Advisory Issued for Upper Pamunkey Branch; Upper and Middle North Anna Branch Advisories on Lake Anna Remain in Place

RICHMOND, Va. – The Upper Pamunkey along with the Upper and Middle sections of North Anna Branch of Lake Anna in Louisa County is experiencing a harmful algae bloom (HAB). The public is advised to avoid contact with this specific area of the lake until algae concentrations return to acceptable levels.  Toxin results for samples are pending and should be available next week. The status report will reflect those updates (see link below). Some harmful algae, called cyanobacteria, can cause skin rash and gastrointestinal illnesses, such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The area to avoid can be seen on an interactive Harmful Algal Bloom map. A status report containing the updated advisory areas based on samples collected on September 19 may be viewed at Lake Anna HAB Status Report 9.22.2023. more>>

Mosquito Sample Test Positive for West Nile Virus in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. –  The Norfolk Department of Public Health has detected the first West Nile Virus (WNV) activity of the season in the city of Norfolk. One mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile virus. The sample was collected in the Edgewater/Larchmont neighborhood on September 14, 2023. The Division of Vector Control is conducting mosquito control operations in this neighborhood, including treatments of storm drains and standing water, conducting fogging operations, and continuing surveillance activities. more>>

Swimming Advisory Issued for Aquia Creek in Stafford County

STAFFORD, Va. — Aquia Creek in Stafford County is under a swimming advisory from the crossing of Aquia Drive to Government Island until further notice due to a nearby sewage release. A sewer force main break occurred several hundred feet from the waterway near Aquia Drive. The swimming advisory is being released out of an abundance of caution until results from water testing are available. The duration of the swimming advisory will be adjusted based on these results. more>>

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – To protect the health of residents and visitors, the New River Health District is issuing a notice about two foxes testing positive for rabies that were found in in the same general area of Christiansburg within the past week. The most recent encounter, on August 5, marks the fifth laboratory confirmed case of animal rabies in Montgomery County and the twelfth in the New River Health District this year. more>>

Harmful Algae Bloom Advisory Lifted for the Upper Section of Pamunkey Branch of Lake Anna

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) announced today that it is lifting the harmful algae bloom advisory for the Upper Section of Pamunkey Branch of Lake Anna in Orange and Spotsylvania counties that was put into effect on June 29. Laboratory results from samples collected July 18 and 31 indicate that algae conditions in the Upper Pamunkey Branch have returned to acceptable levels and a swimming advisory is no longer needed. more>>

Bobcat Tests Positive for Rabies in Sussex County

SUSSEX, Va. – On July 26, a wild female bobcat bit one adult victim and a four-year-old white & brindle boxer hound mix. The bobcat ran from under the adult victim’s car. The victims were bit on Winfield Lane in Waverly. The Sussex County Health Department continues to encourage animal owners to confirm that all pet vaccinations, especially rabies, are current. more>>

Mount Rogers Health District Welcomes New Health Director

MARION, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is pleased to announce Meagan Helmick, PhD, MPH, CHES® has assumed the role as health director for the Mount Rogers Health District. Dr. Helmick most recently served as the southwest region deputy epidemiologist for VDH where she was responsible for overseeing COVID-19 responsibilities and other epidemiological activities for southwest Virginia. She has also held other key roles within the health district since joining the Virginia Department of Health in 2020. These responsibilities included tasks focused on the COVID-19 pandemic as a district epidemiologist and as a case investigator and supervisor. more>>

Harmful Algal Bloom Advisory Area Downsized for Portion of Smith Mountain Lake

ROANOKE, Va. –Water sample results received on July 6 indicate the Lower Blackwater River now has acceptable levels of algae. The results were the second set of acceptable samples collected within the last 10 days, therefore the advisory from the Blackwater River from the confluence with Gills Creek to the confluence with the Roanoke River has been lifted. Normal recreational activities may resume in the area of the Lower Blackwater River. more>>

Testing shows recreational swimming areas are at acceptable bacterial levels

SALUDA, Va. — The Goldman Creek, Rosier Creek and the Potomac waterfront of Colonial Beach health advisory issued early on July 7 is no longer in effect. Results of water testing collected on July 6 at six sites in Goldman Creek/Rosier Creek along Bluffs Point to Colonial Beach indicated acceptable levels for recreational swimming to resume. more>>

SALUDA, Va. — Goldman Creek, Rosier Creek and the Potomac Waterfront of Colonial Beach are under a health advisory for recreational use until further notice due to a sewage release. Overnight between July 3 and July 4, approximately 1.14 million gallons of sewage was spilled from the Town of Colonial Beach wastewater treatment plant near Goldman Creek and the 205 bridge. more>>

Probable Rabid Skunk in Montpelier

ASHLAND, Va. — The Chickahominy Health District would like to notify the residents in the area located on Pleasant Mill Road near Newfound River in Montpelier, that a skunk was collected and tested for rabies due to unusual behavior. Test results were inconclusive, however, out of abundance of caution, the Hanover Health Department is treating it as a positive rabid animal. (Roanoke, Va.) – The Blackwater River arm of Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford, Franklin, and Pittsylvania counties are experiencing a harmful algal bloom (HAB). The public is advised to avoid contact with the water until algal concentrations return to acceptable levels. The reported blooms have produced blue/green discoloration and algal scums that should be avoided. Some harmful algae, called cyanobacteria, can cause skin rash and gastrointestinal illnesses, such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Central Virginia Health District Hosting Rapid REVIVE! Training at County Health Departments

LYNCHBURG, Va. – As fatal drug overdoses continue to be the leading cause of unnatural death in Virginia, the Central Virginia Health District will be offering monthly Rapid REVIVE! Training. As an important tool to potentially reverse opioid overdoses, individuals will be educated on how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and how to effectively use naloxone (Narcan®). The sessions are open to all community members and there are no requirements to participate in the training. Upon completion, each participant will receive two doses of the nasal spray. more>>

Cumberland Plateau Health District Lifts Recreational Water Advisory Impacting Portion of Levisa River

LEBANON, Va.— The Virginia Department of Health and Cumberland Plateau Health District has lifted the Recreational Water Advisory for a portion of the Levisa River in Buchanan County. Earlier this year, flooding caused sewage overflows which resulted in repairs being needed to the sewer mains. As a result of the elevated bacteria levels from the sewage overflow, a Recreational Water Advisory was put into effect along the Levisa River from Oakwood downstream to the Kentucky state line in Buchanan County. more>>

Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District Advises District Residents of Rabid Cat in Fauquier County
Rabid Cat found along Messick Rd, Midland Va.

WARRENTON, Va. — To protect the health of our residents, the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District (RRHD) is issuing a notice about a feral cat that has tested positive for rabies along Messick Rd in Midland. The adult male cat had black fur with brown patches on its lower hind legs. The cat also had a white patch of fur around the chest/abdominal area. The Suffolk Health Department received information March 8, that a skunk tested positive for rabies. In this case, a dog fought with a skunk. This incident occurred in the Quaker Drive area of Suffolk. Fortunately, the dog was vaccinated against rabies. The dog will receive a rabies booster and will be under a 45-day confinement period as a precaution. more>>

ASHLAND, VA. — The Chickahominy Health District would like to notify the residents in the areas located near the intersection of Cedar Plains Road and Whitehall Road, the intersection of Cedar Plains Road and Sage Road, Rocketts Ridge Subdivision, and Mill Forest Subdivision of Goochland County, that a raccoon has tested positive for the rabies virus. This raccoon is part of a recent cluster of two confirmed positive rabies cases along with one suspected positive rabies case in this area of Goochland County. STAUNTON, Va. — The Central Shenandoah Health District (CSHD) will discontinue the use of the COVID-19 hotline on March 30. Over the past year, the CSHD hotline has received nearly 3,000 calls. PETERSBURG, Va.- On Wednesday, February 1, 2023, a 3-year-old grey, male domestic cat tested positive for rabies. The cat is an outdoor domestic cat that is fed by the owner and interacts with other cats. The cat resided in the Ramblewood neighborhood near Kings Road, south of the Dogwood Trace Golf Course in Petersburg, VA 23805.
