Raccoon Tests Positive for the Rabies Virus in Goochland County

ASHLAND, Va. — The Chickahominy Health District would like to notify the residents in the areas located near the intersection of Cedar Plains Road and Whitehall Road, the intersection of Cedar Plains Road and Sage Road, Rocketts Ridge Subdivision, and Mill Forest Subdivision of Goochland County, that a raccoon has tested positive for the rabies virus. This raccoon is part of a recent cluster of two confirmed positive rabies cases along with one suspected positive rabies case in this area of Goochland County. The animals (confirmed and suspected cases) are deceased.

Potential exposures to a rabid animal include bites, scratches, or contact with saliva by open wound or eyes, nose, and/or mouth. Exposures also include direct contact between your pet and the rabid animal. Anyone having information regarding any exposure to the raccoon in the days leading up to March 6 should contact the Goochland Health Department at (804) 365-5843. After hours, please contact Goochland County Animal Protection at (804) 556-5302.

Rabies is a fatal, but preventable, disease carried by mammals that is endemic to the area.

The health district would like to remind all citizens to follow these three important guidelines:

  1. Ensure your pets and livestock are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
  2. Report all exposures to animals (usually bites and scratches) to your doctor and the local health department.
  3. Enjoy wildlife from a distance – do not feed or encourage wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, or foxes to visit your premises.
