Severe weather can occur at any time of the year. It’s important that everyone have an emergency plan to be prepared. Planning should include preparing emergency kits for your home and car. When preparing your kit, consider the unique needs your family might have, such as supplies for family members with special needs or pets.
A supply kit for your home should include:
- Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
- Food – a three-day supply of non-perishable food and infant formula
- First aid supplies and medications
- Clothing and bedding
- Tools and emergency supplies
- Important family documents
A supply checklist with basic items that every supply kit should include is available for download.
Store your emergency kit in an area where you can get to it quickly. Put contents in a large, watertight container (e.g. a large plastic garbage can with a lid and wheels) that you can move easily. Make sure everyone in your family knows where to find the emergency kit.
Check the contents of your kits at least once a year and replace supplies that have expired.
A supply kit for your car should include:
- Blankets
- First Aid Kit
- Booster cables
- Cell phone/charger
- Tool kit
- Water
- Canned or dried foods and a can opener
- Flashlight and extra batteries
