Preparing Your Emergency Supply Kit

hurricaneSevere weather can occur at any time of the year and it is important that everyone have an emergency plan to be prepared. Planning should include preparing emergency kits for your home and car. When preparing your kit, consider the unique needs your family might have, such as supplies for family members with special needs or pets, and be sure to add those items to your kit.

Check the contents of your kits at least once a year and replace supplies that have expired. A supply checklist with basic items that every supply kit should include is available for download.

A supply kit for your home should include:

    • Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
    • Food – a three-day supply of non-perishable food

  • First aid supplies and medications
  • Clothing and bedding
  • Tools and emergency supplies
  • Important family documents

Store your emergency kit in an area where you can get to it quickly.  Put contents in a large, watertight container (e.g. a large plastic garbage can with a lid and wheels) that you can move easily. Make sure everyone in your family knows where to find the emergency kit.

A supply kit for your car should include:

  • Blankets
  • First Aid Kit
  • Booster cables
  • Cell phone/charger
  • Tool kit
  • Water
  • Canned or dried foods and a can opener
  • Flashlight and extra batteries

Be aware of changing weather conditions and threats in your area. Consider subscribing to alerts from your local television stations, the National Weather Service or downloading a mobile application, such as Ready Virginia. For more information preparing for severe weather, please visit:
