What are biosolids?
Biosolids is a term that refers to solid, semisolid, or liquid materials removed from municipal sewage and treated to control disease-causing organisms and reduce odor. Biosolids are used as soil amendments and its use is regulated by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
Why is the study being done?
In 2017 the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) completed a study of land application of biosolids and industrial residuals in Virginia. Specifically, they were asked to analyze the current scientific literature on potential effects on human health and the environment. JLARC found that the overall risk from land application is low under current state regulations. However, they recommended that VDH conduct a pilot epidemiological study of whether land application of biosolids causes human health problems. As a result of the JLARC report, the Virginia General Assembly asked the Virginia Department of Health to conduct an epidemiological study to determine if the land application of biosolids affects the health of Virginians, as well as to test Virginia biosolids for pathogens, as part of HB 5002.
What is an epidemiology study?
Epidemiology study is a method used by the health department to identify causes of health outcomes and diseases in populations. In epidemiology, surveys such as this are viewed collectively from multiple individuals to determine the overall health of the community.
How are study participants selected?
Study participants for the epidemiological study have been randomly selected using addresses found in census data. Addresses that are identified to be close to a field where biosolids are permitted to be applied may receive a postcard in the mail with an invitation to participate in the study.
Will your study show if biosolids make people sick?
Epidemiological studies can never prove causation. It can show if a risk factor (such a biosolids) is associated with a disease in the population.
How will my identity be protected?
No identifiable information will be collected in this survey. Your address will never be made public and is protected by law. Participation in the survey is anonymous.
How will my response be used?
Your response will be combined with responses from others in Virginia that take the survey and put into a report to be submitted to the Virginia General Assembly January 2020.
Where can I find the results of the study?
VDH’s final report is due January 2020 to the General Assembly. Findings may be posted at a later date on this webpage.
