Locality Food Access
Usability and Accessibility: The dashboard below includes information regarding food access for the locality selected. Use the navigation menu on the left side panel to access the dashboard and information for other topic areas at the Virginia or Locality level. The dashboards include text captions for charts and tables that are accessible to screen readers. For each chart or table, you can also access the underlying data by clicking on the links in the Data and Documentation section. For more information on measure definitions, data sources, and data notes, see the collapsible sections below each dashboard.
Metric Descriptions
Metric | Description | Source | Data Published |
---|---|---|---|
Low Access to Food | The population with low access to food is based on the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) low access to store description: People in a county living more than 1 mile from a supermarket or large grocery store if in an urban area, or more than 10 miles from a supermarket or large grocery store if in a rural area. Percent of population with low access represents proportion of the 2010 Census Virginia population data with low access to store. See Data Notes below for more information on how this percentage is calculated. | USDA Food Atlas | May 2017 |
Low Access Low Income | The population with low access and low income is equivalent to the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Low Income Low Access description: Low-income individuals living more than 1 mile (urban areas) or more than 10 miles (rural areas) from the nearest supermarket, supercenter, or large grocery store in a Census Tract. Low income is defined as annual family income at or below 200 percent of the Federal poverty threshold for family size. Percent of population with low access low income represents the proportion of the 2010 Census Virginia population with low income low access. | USDA Food Atlas | May 2017 |
Children with Low Food Access | Number of children (age < 18) in a county living more than 1 mile from a supermarket or large grocery store if in an urban area, or more than 10 miles from a supermarket or large grocery store if in a rural area. Percent of children with low food access represents the proportion of the 2010 Census Virginia children population with low access to store. | USDA Food Atlas | May 2017 |
Percent of Households with Low Access to Food Without a Vehicle | Number of housing units located more than 1 mile from the nearest supermarket, supercenter, or large grocery store without access to a vehicle. Percent of households with low access to food without access to a vehicle represents the count of such households over the total number of households from the 2010-2014 Census 5-year American Community Survey. | USDA Food Atlas | May 2017 |
Data Notes
Notes | Description |
---|---|
Excluded Localities | The USDA Food Atlas does not include data for Buchanan, Alexandria, Dickenson, Falls Church, or King George and therefore these localities have been excluded from this dashboard topic area. |
Low Access to Food Population | The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) determines the low access to food population using the Trade Dimensions’ 2015 TDLinx store directory and the 2010 Census of Population and Housing’s block-level population counts. For both the number and percentage counts, the store data is from 2015 and the population data is from 2010. |
Margin of Error for Race/Ethnicity Data: US Census Bureau 2010 Census | USDA leverages Census data for race/ethnicity breakouts. Data is only displayed for Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, and White races/ethnicities. Data for American Indian/Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and other races/ethnicities is not included due to high margins of error from small sample populations for these groups. As a result, data for these races/ethnicities cannot be displayed with confidence in their accuracy. These groups are not excluded for lack of importance. For more information about additional races/ethnicities, visit the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey. |
Locality Margin of Error | Each locality view displays information for which the data meets a certain level of confidence in the sample size and margin of error for survey-based data. In many instances, data elements at the locality level have samples sizes too small for sources to accurately report. As a result, several locality level data elements are shown with null values. |
