Virginia Bedding and Upholstered Furniture Inspection

The Virginia bedding law came into being at the General Assembly Session of 1946, approved March 25, 1946. It has seen minor changes during several General Assembly sessions in the past years. But, the purpose of the Bedding Law remains unchanged - to protect the consumer of the Commonwealth.

Because the Legislature is concerned about the public health of the Commonwealth, the State Board of Health has been charged with the administration of Chapter 263, the bedding law. It covers Manufacturers and Importers of Bedding and Upholstered Furniture, Reupholsterers, Renovators of Bedding, Sanitizers of Used furniture and bedding, and Supply dealers. Each must be licensed to sell their products in Virginia. Their product must carry an acceptable Law Label with name and Uniform Registry number identification. The Law Label also must identify the contents, by percentage, of the concealed stuffing. Each manufacturing plant from which products are sent to Virginia must be individually licensed.

State inspectors are responding to complaints, and inspecting retail stores and businesses, daily, to achieve compliance with the Commonwealth Bedding & Upholstered Furniture Law.
