The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released recommendations on a new way for healthcare providers to treat latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), making treatment for LTBI shorter and simpler than ever before. The recommendations, published in the CDC’s December 9 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, provide guidance on how to administer a new 12-dose regimen for TB preventative therapy that will shorten and simplify the course of treatment from about nine months to 12 weeks.
The CDC advises that the 12-dose regimen does not replace the current latent TB infection treatment guidelines, but offers an additional option for treatment of LTBI.
Click here for new VDH guidelines on using the 12-dose regimen. Local health departments are reminded that the new regimen requires DOT.
