Progress in Petersburg: Governor Youngkin Celebrates Milestones in Citywide Partnership

On August 7, Governor Glenn Youngkin joined local leaders and community members in Petersburg to highlight the progress of the Partnership for Petersburg, a multi-sector initiative launched to make the city a better place to live, work, and raise a family.

The partnership brings together state, local, community, and faith leaders to focus on five key areas: public safety, education, health, economic development, and community engagement.

At the event, Governor Youngkin announced two major investments:

  • A $3 million grant to support a public-private partnership with Civica, a nonprofit medication maker, to produce low-cost insulin. Civica plans to offer insulin at no more than $30 per vial or $55 for a box of five pens, regardless of insurance status.
  • An additional $7.5 million from the Department of Conservation and Recreation to upgrade Petersburg’s aging water and sewer systems. The city is also working with the Army Corps of Engineers to accelerate dredging efforts on the Appomattox River to reduce flooding.

The Governor highlighted measurable impacts from the initiative so far:

  • A 50% drop in homicides, reflecting a stronger focus on public safety.
  • A 52% increase in pre- and post-natal health visits, improving maternal health access.
  • More than 1,000 mobile clinics and pop-up health events have brought care directly to neighborhoods.
  • 600 new jobs have been added, along with rising home values and building activity.

The Partnership for Petersburg is a model of how public, private, and community collaboration can lead to lasting, meaningful change.
