Child Safety and Protection Month   

November is Child Safety and Protection Month. In 2023, Virginian children and youth aged 0-24 years accounted for 3,907 hospitalizations and 794 deaths due to injuries. 

During this month, VDH reminds parents, teachers and caregivers things they can do to ensure children and youth grow up in safe and secure environments. 

 

Create a Safe Environment 

• Store medications and toxic materials safely. 

• Take steps to prevent lead poisoning. 

• Make sure babies sleep safely.  

• Help prevent youth violence and bullying. 

• Take steps to prevent drowning.  

• Store firearms properly. 

 

Be Safe on the Road 

• Make sure babies and young children ride in the proper safety seat. 

• Wear properly fitted helmets and safety gear when biking and skating. 

• Protect kids getting on and off school buses. 

 

Take Care of Yourself So You Can Support Positive and Safe Childhood Experiences 

• Take time to recharge. 

• Talk to others if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
