The Pittsylvania/Danville Health district is composed of two jurisdictions: Pittsylvania County and the City of Danville, a total area of 1045 square miles. The county is rural, with farming (mostly tobacco) and light industry as the major economic activities, and a per capita income of $11,196. Danville is also a major tobacco market, and also has textile mills and other light industry in its economic base with a per capita income of $11,344.

Health department services are provided by the staff, public/private partnerships and volunteers. Fees for services; most services are provided on a sliding scale, based on client’s income. Free services include childhood immunizations and STD services.
