Environmental Health Technician (Seasonal)
We are seeking a detail-oriented individual to perform seasonal water quality monitoring and facility inspections. This role ensures public safety by monitoring public beaches, public pools, and marinas in compliance with state health regulations and established monitoring plans. This position is offered at $20.00 per hour. Successful candidate must have a valid Driver’s License and successful background check.
Key Responsibilities:
- Water Quality Monitoring: Collect water samples from public bathing beaches and other exposure sources on a weekly basis. Calibrate and operate scientific meters and probes to perform field tests.
- Regulatory Compliance: Interpret field data against minimum water quality standards. Under the technical direction of senior Environmental Health staff, determine the necessity for beach closures or swimming advisories.
- Public Notification: Draft and issue Public Service Announcements (PSAs) regarding beach health status. Physically post and remove swimming advisory signage at beach locations as water quality dictates.
- Reporting: Maintain accurate documentation and technical reports. Formally report findings to the relevant government agencies responsible for beach management.
- Sanitary Inspections: Conduct inspections of marinas and boat moorings to ensure compliance with the Sanitary Regulations for Marinas and Boat Moorings of the Virginia Health Laws. Verify the availability and functionality of required boat holding tank pump-outs and dump stations.
- Public Pool Inspections: Conduct inspections of public pool to ensure compliance with the Regulations Governing Tourist Establishment Swimming Pools and Other Public Pools. Identifies public health threats specific to aquatic venues.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to follow strict sampling protocols and scientific testing criteria.
- Competency in using and maintaining scientific field equipment.
- Strong written communication skills for drafting official notifications and technical reports.
- Ability to work independently in outdoor field environments and adhere to a rigorous weekly schedule.
Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour
