WIC Program
WIC provides federal grants to states for supplemental food, health care referrals and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding postpartum women; and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. WIC is effective in improving the health of pregnant women, new mothers and their infants. Studies have shown that each WIC dollar spent on prenatal care can save up to $3 in Medicaid costs for mothers and infants in the first 60 days after birth.

The Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Overseas Program is available to eligible participants living overseas, including:

- Active duty service members and their family members
- Department of Defense civilian employees and their family members
- Department of Defense contractors and their family members

Who is Eligible?
You are eligible to apply to Virginia WIC if you...
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, just had a baby or are a mother, father, grandparent, foster parent, or other legal guardian of a child under the age of 5.
- Live in Virginia.
- Have a nutritional need (this is determined at your local WIC clinic).
- Meet income guidelines based on family size and family gross earnings.

How to Apply
If you would like to apply for the first time, please call or visit one of our offices to receive assistance and make an appointment.

What to Know When Scheduling & Visiting
You will be expected to come in person to the office to complete your WIC appointment with your child so we may have up to date height, weight, and hemoglobin measurements. Appointment Must-Haves:
All Child(ren)/women who are applying for benefits must be present in office.
Identification for ALL:
- Picture ID (State/Work Student ID)
- Birth Certificate/Infant’s Hospital Birth Letter
- Crib Card (newborns only)
- Passport/Visa
- Social Security Card
- Current Medicaid card
- eWIC card (for returning clients only)
Proof of income (must be current within 30 days of your appointment)
- Medicaid Card
- Medicaid/SNAP/TANF award letter; Free/Reduced Lunch Letter
- Signed Statement from employer
- Current LES/Paystub/W-2
- Foster Care Statement from Social Services
Proof of where you live in Virginia
- Driver’s license
- Utility Bill
- Rent receipt/lease
- VA Medicaid
Who can come?
- Parent, Guardian, Caretaker listed on account
- Women and children who will be seen that day
What to expect?
- 30mins to 1 hour in length appointment
- Finger stick for bloodwork depending on age and WIC category
- Height and Weight check
- Nutrition Education
- Review of you food benefits
- Will only be completed by phone.
