Vital Records (Birth, Death, Divorce, and Marriage Certificates)

Birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates are maintained by Virginia’s Division of Vital Records in Richmond. Vital records are available to immediate family members only: mother, father, husband, wife, adult son or daughter, brother, sister, grandparents and adult grandchildren with valid identification. Aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, ex-spouses, etc. cannot obtain a vital record. Birth records become public information after 100 years while death, marriage and divorce records after 25 years.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES IN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY

Prince William Health District Office of Vital Records certifies births that occurred outside of the hospital only.


CORRECTING A VIRGINIA BIRTH CERTIFICATE

To amend a birth certificate, parties are encouraged to write to Vital Records with their correction request before going to the Circuit Court.

You may request certain corrections to a birth certificate through Virginia’s Division of Vital Records.  If the request was denied by the Division of Vital Records, you may file a request through the Prince William Circuit Court or with the Circuit Court in the jurisdiction where you reside.  A copy of the denial letter from the Division of Vital Records must accompany the petition, order and any supporting documentation to correct a birth certificate.

Correction of a Virginia Birth Certificate


DEATH CERTIFICATES IN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY

Prince William Office of Vital Records can:

  • Provide copies of death certificates for all localities in Virginia.
  • Certify death certificate applications.
  • Issue a Verification of Death Letter.
  • Issue out-of-state transit permits.
  • Application for Vital Record vital records are $12.00 per copy.

Certified copies of Virginia vital records are available through Virginia’s Division of Vital Records and at full service Department of Motor Vehicles locations.  If you born in another state Vital Records Across America can assist you with contact information for the state in which you were born.  There is an expedited service that you use called VitalChek.  You can reach them at 1.877.572.6333 option 2.  You will need a major credit card for this service.
