Vital Records

The Eastern Shore Health District can help you obtain important legal documents, including birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates for events that occurred in the state of Virginia. This service is available in-person at both the Accomack County Health Department and the Northampton County Health Department or online.

Anyone requesting a vital record must bring proof of identification. The list of accepted ID forms can be found here. Vital Records are available to immediate family members only- mother, father, current spouse, child, brother, sister and grandparents with valid ID. Aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, etc. cannot obtain a Vital Record.

The Code of Virginia requires a cost of $12.00 per certificate search. There is no refund if the certificate is not found. An exception is a Certificate of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth, which have no cost. A fee of $10 is charged for making an amendment to an existing record.
