Overview
The Prince William Health District Onsite Sewage and Water Services database is the repository for all of the historical documentation pertaining to onsite septic systems and private wells. The documents for each individual property are listed by street address and GPIN number. You may also search the database for key terms, names, dates, etc.

Regular water well system maintenance is important. Knowing and practicing the basics of regular well maintenance can reduce risks to your water supply and prevent costly and inconvenient breakdowns. Properly constructed private water supply systems require little routine maintenance. These simple steps will help protect your system and investment.
There are a number of Drinking Water Clinics in various health districts. It’s a great opportunity to spread the word and get a large number of people to test their private wells.
The Prince William County Code of Ordinances has information about onsite sewage disposal systems. You can either click on Chapter 23 or do a search for Section 23-48, which pertains to the onsite sewage disposal systems. According to Section 23-48, onsite sewage disposal systems not requiring a Virginia Pollution Discharge Elimination System (VPDES) permit shall have pump-out accomplished at least once every five years.
Alternative Onsite Sewage Systems (AOSS)
Proper operation and maintenance of an AOSS is required by law and is necessary to ensure the continued functioning of your alternative system and may prevent premature failure of the system. Operation and maintenance information for your alternative system may be found by contacting the original system designer, contacting the Prince William Health District, or by visiting the VDH Manufacturers' Instructions Website. Massage establishments are required to apply to the Health Department for a permit and pay a $204 fee for new applicants and a $153 fee thereafter to renew a permit. They must obtain approvals from three entities (fire marshal, zoning department, and building department) before the health department conducts an inspection.
Once these approvals are obtained, the health department will schedule an inspection within 3 weeks of application and fee submission. The facility must:
- Meet minimum lighting and ventilation requirements according to the Uniform Building Code
- Provide adequate equipment for disinfecting and sterilizing any instruments used
- Provide hot and cold running water; provide separate dressing, bathing, and toilet facilities for patrons segregated by gender
- Provide clean towels and linens for patrons receiving massage services
- Maintain the walls and the physical facility in good repair and in a sanitary condition
