Safe Sleep

October is Safe Sleep Month. Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is the leading cause of death for babies one month old to one year old in Virginia and nationwide. SUID can be defined as death occurring among infants aged younger than one year with no immediately obvious cause.

The Chesterfield Health District serves many maternity patients, including first‑time moms and families who have recently immigrated to the United States. Some come from countries where crib safety standards differ, or where safe sleep guidance is not widely taught.

“In our clinic, the need for safe, appropriate sleep spaces is urgent, and many of our patients are not aware what steps reduce the risk,” said Yenifer Jerez, health educator.

With proper safe sleep practices and sleep environments, any family can reduce the risk of SUIDs in their infants.

Jerez teaches the ABCs of Safe Sleep: Alone, on their Backs, in a Crib. The class addresses common mistakes even the best-intentioned parents make. It also gives you tips on how to make sure every caregiver that will be responsible for your baby knows what to do.

The most common misconception about infant sleep is that sleeping in a bed with your baby is a good way to keep them safe. It is best to have them in a separate crib but in the same room. This allows for easy access to feeding and quick reaction time for crying or other signs of distress. If you sleep in the same bed, you run the risk of rolling over on them, or they could fall off the bed.

Participants who complete the workshop receive a free pack n’ play/bassinet, thermometer/humidity sensor and educational materials. From the Heart Stitchers donates hand-crocheted sleep sacks, privacy shawls, onesies, small car seat blankets, and swaddles. Participants can also win a raffled baby monitor and gift cards.

Classes are offered bimonthly in English and Spanish with 2027 dates available. Participants can sign up on ChesterfieldVA.health and select events and classes. Additional educational materials are available for parents including a crib assessment to determine if your crib is safe.
