Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) and The Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Department of Pathology, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS), offer four one-year ACGME-accredited fellowships in forensic pathology – two located in Richmond, two satellite positions in either eastern Norfolk/Virginia Beach, the mountainous region of Roanoke or outside metro Washington D.C. in Manassas, Virginia.
The training program fulfills the eligibility requirements for Board certification by the American Board of Pathology. Fellows participate in the operations of a district office of one of the nation’s first statewide medical examiner systems. Fellows investigate scenes, perform 200-250 complete medicolegal autopsies, sign out inspections, conference with interested parties and testify in courts. Fellows are mentored by Board certified forensic pathologists. Co-location with the State Department of Forensic Science permits contemporaneous case consultation with firearms (IBUS) and tool marks, trace evidence, latent prints/imaging/AFIS, questioned documents, forensic biology (DNA) and other forensic scientists. VCU Health System provides forensic radiology, odontology, neuropathology, and pathology subspecialty consultation. Trainees attend subspecialty courses and reference a medicolegal library, Medline, Internet, and case database. The office participates in the teaching of students and residents and military personnel. Fellows have the opportunity to work with staff to undertake a research project.
Requirements: Applicants must be Board certified or eligible in AP or any combination of subspecialties including AP. They must obtain an unrestricted medical license in the State of Virginia. A valid driver’s license is also required. VCUHS only sponsors J1 VISA status for international candidates.
Stipends: The University salary and benefits are competitive.
