Yes, HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is available in Prince William Health District.
PrEP, or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is a daily medication that can prevent HIV infection in individuals who are HIV-negative. It's highly effective when taken as prescribed and is a key component of comprehensive HIV prevention strategies. PrEP is available as a pill or injection and requires regular follow-up with a healthcare provider.
Key Points:
- Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an HIV medicine taken by people who do not have HIV that reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% and from injection drug use by at least 74%.
- Although PrEP protects against HIV during sex without a condom or if a condom fails, it does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and should be used with condoms when possible.
How PrEP works:
- PrEP medications prevent HIV from establishing an infection in the body if a person is exposed to the virus.
- They work by blocking the virus from replicating in CD4 cells, which are crucial for the immune system.
- Combining PrEP with condoms and other prevention methods further reduces the risk of HIV and other STIs.
Important considerations:
- PrEP is only for people who are HIV-negative.
- Regular testing for HIV is crucial while taking PrEP, typically every three months, according to VDH and CDC guidelines.
- PrEP can have some side effects, such as nausea, headache, or stomach pain, but they are usually mild and temporary.
- Discuss any side effects with your healthcare provider.
- PrEP is a valuable tool for HIV prevention, but it's essential to use it as part of a comprehensive prevention strategy.
For more information on HIV PrEP, please contact Prince William Health District clinics in Manassas and Woodbridge. Call 703-792-6301 or visit the attached factsheet.
