GATE CITY, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health’s Virginia Cancer Registry (VCR) will release its Scott County pediatric cancer investigation report on January 8, 2026. Recognizing the impact of this investigation and the community’s ongoing concerns, the VCR and LENOWISCO Health District will host a public town hall meeting on January 8, 2026, to walk the community through the findings and answer questions. Virginia Health Officials Report Confirmed Measles Case in Central Region
RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is reporting a confirmed case of measles in an adult resident of the Central Region. The individual developed symptoms after exposure to a confirmed measles case. The individual followed public health recommendations by staying at home after their exposure, so as a result, VDH is reporting no additional locations where others may have been exposed. To protect the individual’s privacy, VDH will not provide any additional information. more>>

Virginia Department of Health Closes the Poquoson River and Its Tributaries to Shellfish Harvesting
RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health announced today that the Poquoson River and its tributaries are closed to harvesting shellfish due to a sewage release that occurred on December 16, 2025. Because these waters can be contaminated with pollutants such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses, shellfish taken from the area affected by the emergency closure are currently unacceptable for consumption. The temporary emergency closure is set to be effective from December 17, 2025, through January 6, 2026. more>>

Rabid Kitten Bites Man in South Norfolk
CHESAPEAKE, Va. – On December 6, 2025, an employee of a South Norfolk business was bitten by a feral kitten while attempting to render medical assistance. The kitten was discovered in the vicinity of Buell Street several weeks prior to the incident. The employee removed the kitten to his home, where the bite occurred. The kitten is deceased. The employee is currently receiving rabies post-exposure treatment. more>>

Alexandria Health Department Issues Rabies Alert After Fox in the Rosemont Area Tests Positive
Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is notifying Alexandria community members that a fox from the Rosemont area tested positive for rabies. On November 9, a fox came into contact with a dog and a person near a home in Alexandria’s Rosemont area. The fox is dead, but testing revealed it had rabies. Alexandria Health Department is working with the exposed person and the owner of the exposed dog on safe next steps, but there is an increased risk of rabies exposures in the community. more>>

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Public health officials are currently seeing an increase in hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) outbreaks in the Rappahannock Area Health District (RAHD). Since August, RAHD has investigated three separate outbreaks at both child daycare facilities and elementary schools across the district. Rabid Cat Reported in Norfolk
NORFOLK, Va. – A cat in Norfolk has tested positive for rabies. The domestic shorthair cat, described as a free-roaming brown tabby, was reported demonstrating aggressive behavior and picked up on Wellman Street in the Glenrock neighborhood on October 10, 2025. The cat was subsequently euthanized and sent to the Viginia Department of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) for testing. It was reported positive for rabies today, October 17, 2025. Rabid Feral Cat Confirmed on North Main Street in Hillsville
HILLSVILLE, Va. – The Carroll County Health Department is alerting the public to a confirmed case of rabies in a feral cat found acting aggressively on August 21, 2025, in the 1200 block of North Main Street in Hillsville. The cat, described as a short-haired gray feral feline, displayed classic signs of rabies, including unprovoked aggression and lack of fear of humans. It was reported lunging at pedestrians and possibly engaging with other animals in the area. The animal has since been captured and tested positive for rabies. more>>

ALEXANDRIA, VA. – Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is advising residents about a potential exposure to measles in northern Virginia. The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) was notified of a confirmed case of measles that traveled through Washington Dulles International Airport on Tuesday, August 12. The confirmed case is a resident of another state. HILLSVILLE, Va. – The Carroll County Health Department has confirmed a case of rabies involving a raccoon. The animal was found near the intersection of Carrollton Pike and Farmers Market Drive, close to restaurants and hotels at Exit 14 on Interstate 77. The raccoon was observed exhibiting unusual behavior on August 7. It was also reported to be involved in altercations with feral cats in the area. This raises concerns about potential rabies exposure among animals and humans. more>>

FAIRFAX, Va. – Over the last two months, there has been an increase in the number of people seeking emergency care for hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), especially involving young children, ages 0 to 4-year-olds in Fairfax County. There have been six outbreaks of HFMD reported in the Fairfax County Health District in 2025, with five of them being reported in the past two months. NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Department of Public Health has detected the first West Nile Virus (WNV) activity of the season in the city of Norfolk. One mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile virus. The sample was collected on July 18, 2025, along the 1100 block of North Military Highway. The Division of Vector Control is conducting mosquito control operations in the adjacent area, including treatment of standing water. These visits allow children to receive school-required immunizations and physicals ahead of the back-to-school season.
Families can schedule appointments with a primary care physician or one of RHHD’s community partners. LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lynchburg City Health Department has received confirmation that a stray cat
submitted for testing on June 9 was positive for rabies. The cat attacked a woman on Early Street

SUFFOLK, Va. -The Suffolk Health Department received information today that a skunk tested positive for rabies. The skunk was found in a dog kennel with three dogs. Fortunately, the dogs were current on their rabies vaccinations. As a precaution the dogs will receive rabies booster vaccinations and will be under a 45-day confinement. Central Virginia Health District Confirms Rabies in a Skunk
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Appomattox County Health Department has received confirmation that a skunk submitted for testing on April 30, 2025, was positive for rabies. The skunk was found in the Gladstone area of Appomattox County. Due to the rural location where the skunk was found, the public was not at risk of contracting the disease from the rabid animal. However, the Central Virginia Health District wants to remind the public to remain vigilant since rabies is present in the area. Including the skunk, additional rabid animals have been identified in the City of Lynchburg, as well as in Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell counties. Last year, the district had a total of 31 cases of rabies in animals, with at least one rabid animal in each of the five localities. more>>

AMHERST, Va. – The Amherst County Health Department has received confirmation that a stray cat submitted for testing on April 10, 2025, was positive for rabies. The cat was found on West Monitor Road near Poorhouse Farm Road in Amherst. This includes a large and growing outbreak in Texas and New Mexico. In this outbreak, more than 19 of every 20 people who got measles were unvaccinated or did not know their vaccine status. Rabies Update in Central Virginia Health District
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Central Virginia Health District is providing an update on the occurrence of rabies in the district, which includes the City of Lynchburg and Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell counties. Since January 1, 2025, the district has received reports from the state laboratory that four animals have tested positive for rabies. The rabid animals include two raccoons, one skunk and one dog. The rabid skunk was found in Lynchburg and the other three animals were found in Bedford County. In 2024, the district had 31 cases of rabies in animals, with at least one rabid animal in each of our five localities. more>>>

Rabid Raccoon Reported in Norfolk
NORFOLK, Va. – A raccoon in Norfolk has tested positive for rabies. The juvenile raccoon was found in a marsh area along the river bordering the 3500 block of Granby Street on December 29, 2024. The raccoon was reported ill and was euthanized and sent to the Virginia Department of Consolidated Laboratory Services in Richmond for testing. It was reported positive for rabies on January 2, 2025. There are no known exposures associated with this raccoon; however, if you have been bitten or scratched by a raccoon in this area, please contact the Norfolk Department of Public Health at 757-683-2712. more>>
