About the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)
The Blue Ridge Health District Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a force of dedicated volunteers who stand ready to support their communities in the event of a public health emergency. The MRC has medical and non-medical community members, who volunteer their skills, expertise and time to support ongoing public health initiatives and health emergencies throughout the district.

Mission
BRHD MRC is built on the concept that our community can improve it’s overall health and preparedness by organizing volunteer resources from within.

Purpose

  • Recruit health care professionals and supporting role volunteers.
  • Create a framework of skills to address our community’s needs.
  • Train volunteers to respond effectively to local emergencies.
  • Provide reserve capacity to respond to local, state and national public health needs

Why volunteer?
BRHD MRC actively improves and protects their community’s public health by:

  • Providing community health education and preventative health screenings
  • Providing medical services to at-risk populations
  • Deploying to communicable disease outbreak response efforts
  • Volunteering to emergency preparedness training and exercises
  • Providing staffing and support to local, state and national emergency responses

Here are some examples of the volunteer deployments you may see at BRHD:

  • Providing office staffing support for medical services 
  • Staffing state and local emergency shelters
  • Staffing Point of Dispensing (POD) sites for giving medications and vaccinations 
  • Utilizing skills to teach community CPR, Stop the Bleed and Naloxone classes
  • Supporting WIC program during clinics

Becoming a Volunteer

To become a Blue Ridge Health District Medical Reserve Corps Volunteer, please submit an application in the Virginia Volunteer Health System.
