Public Water Systems
The VDH Office of Drinking Water (ODW) protects public health and helps ensure all Virginians have a safe and adequate supply of drinking water. They enforce drinking water regulations and standards of the Virginia Public Water Supply Law and the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. Click here to learn more about ODW. Private Wells
Rappahannock Rapidan Health District environmental health team assists residents who have or desire private wells on their property. The team assists with documentation, payment of fees and permits for private wells. Each county health department throughout our health district maintains records on properties with private wells.
Applications are to be submitted to a licensed Onsite Soil Evaluator (OSE) for the construction of new wells and the abandonment of existing wells. For more information on Water and Wastewater Services, click here.

Beginning July 2019, applicants seeking evaluation and design services from VDH must submit a petition for VDH Services and meet means testing criteria or VDH Hardship Guidelines.
