Onsite Sewage & Water Program

What
The onsite sewage and water program ensures that we have safe water supplies by:

Protecting surface and ground water to ensure safe drinking water
Offering permits for private wells, sewage systems, and sewage disposal
Investigating reports of raw sewage or other reports of ground water contamination

Food Program

What
The food program protects your health by:

Permitting and inspecting establishments such as restaurants, school cafeterias, hospital cafeterias and temporary event vendors (booths at public fairs)
Helping to ensure that food is prepared and maintained safely to prevent foodborne illnesses (salmonella, etc.)
Investigating reports of foodborne illness, provide education about safe food handling practices and work with eating establishments to correct deficiencies.

How to Report a Foodborne Illness

Call your local health department and be prepared to provide the following information:

Your name, address, and daytime telephone number (illnesses can also be reported anonymously)
A list of symptoms. What day and time did they start?
Have the symptoms gone away? If yes, when?
Do you know anyone else who had similar symptoms? Did you eat or drink anything at an event or food establishment together? If possible, supply the names and phone numbers of others who became ill
If you believe you became ill from eating at a particular place or event, we will need the name of the establishment or event and a list of everything you ate.
If two or more unrelated people became ill, we may need to know where they ate and what they ate for the last three days.

To report a foodborne illness during weekend hours, contact the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department at (434) 972- 6200 option 3 and leave a voicemail message for the Environmental Health Specialist on call.

Rabies Program

What
Rabies is a virus that kills humans and animals. The rabies program protects health by:

Working with animal control officers to investigate animal bites to people
Recommending immediate medical attention to someone who has been bitten by a potentially rabid animal
Providing rabies immunizations (based on income)
Providing animal testing at no charge (when necessary) to determine if an animal is rabid

If You Have Been Bitten…

If you or any other person has been bitten by an animal, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and help the health department determine whether there is a risk of rabies.

Don't panic...but don't ignore the bite, either. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and lots of water. Washing thoroughly will greatly lessen the chance of infection. Give first aid as you would for any wound.
If possible, capture the animal under a large box or can, or at least identify it before it runs away. Don't try to pick the animal up. Call an animal control or law enforcement officer to come get it.
Notify your family doctor immediately and explain how you got the bite. Your doctor will want to know if the animal has been captured. If necessary, your doctor will refer you to receive the anti-rabies treatment recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Your doctor will also treat you for other possible infections that could be caused from the bite.
Report the bite to Environmental Health Services at your local health department. During weekend hours, contact the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department at (434) 972-6200, option 3.

Tourist Establishments and Public Swimming Pools:
We inspect and permit hotels, motels, campgrounds, summer camps and we periodically inspect the swimming pools and spas of these operations.

We inspect migrant labor camps to insure that safe and healthy living conditions are provided for migrant workers and their families while they are employed and living in Virginia.

Child Care/Adult Care/Mental Health Facilities:
At the request of other state agencies, we inspect child care, adult care, nursing homes, and mental health facilities.
