Hampton Health District Dental

The First Visit to the Dentist

A child's first visit to the dental office is a very important step. Early dental care is a valuable start toward healthy teeth and gums. We see children for a routine first visit at age three. Often we see children at an earlier age because of some existing dental problem, a dental accident, or if a mother has a specific dental concern for her child.

Hopefully, the first visit will be a positive, non-threatening experience. Our dental staff understands that this is a new experience for the child. For most children, this first visit is an adventure, something to look forward to. With the dental staff's guidance, children are allowed to explore, ask questions and proceed at their own individual pace. Each child is told what to expect and is made to feel in control. All the gadgets have special names, for example, “Mr. Thirsty” is the suction.

Most children enjoy their first visit to the dentist. Our patients are rewarded with a toothbrush, a sticker and most important – praise from our dental staff.

These early experiences will help form lifelong habits and attitudes toward personal dental care that are very important! Our dental staff believes that if a child enjoys his first dental visit, he will return for future visits.
