The Peninsula Health District has death records on file for deaths that occurred within the past five (5) years in Newport News, Williamsburg, Poquoson, James City County and York County. Death records are filed in the county or city in which the death occurred, not the county or city in which the person lived.
Certified copies of death certificates can be obtained only by an immediate family member of the deceased or by a representative of a funeral home. Immediate family members include mother, father, sibling, current spouse, and adult child. Valid documentation that identifies the relationship between the deceased and the immediate family member is required to obtain the death certificate.
The cost per copy of a death record is $12.00.
