Health Services

Fees for services; most services are provided on a sliding scale, based on client's income. Free services include childhood immunizations and STD services.

Maternity Services: The health department has a public/private partnership with two private obstetricians in Danville and an obstetrical group in Lynchburg. This arrangement provides nearly all of the maternity and obstetrical care for Medicaid and indigent patients in the District. Upon enrollment to maternity services at the health department, the patient chooses one of the participating obstetricians. Routine pre-natal care, case management, postpartum care, newborn evaluations, home visitation and homemaker services are provided by the health department staff, Case consultation, management of high risk pregnancies, and deliveries are performed by the private sector obstetricians. There are childhood classes and a breastfeeding support group. Medicaid eligibility is done by an on-site eligibility worker.

Pediatric Services: The health department is the major provider of well child and ambulatory pediatric services for Medicaid and indigent patients in the District. Care is provided by pediatricians, nurse practitioners, public health nurses, nutritionists, and social workers. A clinician is on call 24 hours a day for consultation, education and referral . Case management, and home visitation are available. Medicaid eligibility is conducted on-site.

Women's Health Services/Family Planning: Services provided on a sliding scale system. Day and limited evening clinics are available, and offer family planning services to include birth control pills, condoms and other barrier methods, Norplants, and Depo-provera. Services include screening for breast and cervical cancer, physical examination, counseling, birth control supplies, screening for STD and HIV, and case management of abnormal lab findings. Confidential service provided.

Resource Mothers Program: Grant program, supported by community organizations and volunteers. Free services include a mentoring resource mother, home visitation, assistance with appointments, transportation, learning parenting skills, coordinating child care, coaching to complete school or obtain GED, job skill training and job placement. Service to pregnant clients to age 19 and first time mothers with a child less than one year old.

Childhood Immunizations: Free service available on walk-in and appointment basis. Computerized immunization records utilized.

Communicable Disease Control: Weekly STD clinics in Danville and Pittsylvania County providing free examination and treatment. HIV on a confidential and anonymous basis. Counseling Immunization and prophylaxis for foreign travel. Adult immunizations, including influenza, given on a flat fee rate. TB screening. Case management for communicable diseases. HIV counseling and testing.

WIC Program: Free service of nutritional supplement program for pregnant women and children under five years. Includes nutritional educational programs, case management for clients at nutritional risk, breastfeeding support group, and food vouchers. Services integrated into the maternity, pediatric, and immunization programs.

Personal Care/Homemaker Services: Services provided with third party payor or hourly flat fee. Services include hygiene, nutrition, ambulation, and light housekeeping.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program: Grant program supported by community organizations and volunteers. Partnership with Danville Regional Medical Center and Danville Imaging Center for free or reduced rates for screening mammograms. Volunteer training for speakers on breast and cervical cancer prevention.

School Health: Health department nurses assist health education in schools. Healthy Lifestyles in schools. Healthy Heart 6th grade. Breath of Life in 7th grade.

Danville/Pittsylvania Interagency Council for Infants and Toddlers: Part H services including the Council coordinator and case manager.

Dental Services: Dental clinics operated at the Danville site and the Pittsylvania County site. Children's Services (age 3-18): The primary focus is children who are seen for cleanings, flouride treatments, fillings, stainless steel crown, extractions, sealants, and oral hygiene instruction.

Environmental Services

The Environmental Health Section evaluates site well and sewage disposal construction, grants permits, and inspects the completed system. It inspects and permits food service establishments and provides food service handlers sanitation courses several times a year. It conducts rabies and West Nile Virus surveillance and control programs, and provides general environmental services for investigating environmental sanitation complaints.


Other Information

The district is composed of two jurisdictions, Pittsylvania County and the City of Danville. The total area is 1045 square miles. The county is rural, with farming (mostly tobacco) and light industry as the major economic activities. Per capita income is $11,196. Danville is a major tobacco market, and also has textile mills and other light industry in its economic base. Per capita income is $11,344.

Health department services are provided by the staff, public/private partnerships and volunteers.
