Diseases will always represent a formidable challenge to public health professionals who strive to identify, track, and prevent them. Particularly challenging are those unexpected communicable diseases that have emerged or re-emerged over the past few decades (HIV, SARS, Pandemic Influenza, etc.). While a number of these diseases have vaccines or drug treatments, many still do not. Public health professionals continue to work towards discovering and sharing the latest disease information with healthcare professionals and the public. That continued work leads us to a better understanding of the risks associated with disease, the modes of disease transmission, as well as many other characteristics of the diseases in our community. As we continue to expand our knowledge of disease, our prevention efforts and treatment become more effective. Gathered here are disease resources on a select number of diseases impacting the Central Shenandoah health district as well as references to other sources of disease information. Any information here should not replace instructions from your doctor or medical professional.

Flu seasons are unpredictable in a number of ways, including when they begin, how severe they are, how long they last and which viruses will spread. Each year from October to May we increase our surveillance for influenza-like illness and begin to prepare for the coming of the next flu season. Information regarding this year's flu season can be found on our 2010-2011 Influenza Season webpage. Our Central Shenandoah Health District Flu Reports, which contain recent surveillance statistics and flu updates, can be found on our data and statistics webpage.
