Environmental Health Services protect the health and safety of Chesapeake citizens through safe food and water, proper sewage disposal and correction of environmental hazards.
The Chesapeake Health District is one of the fastest growing Districts in Virginia. The Environmental Health section of the Chesapeake Health Department is responsible for serving the approximately 214,000 citizens of Chesapeake. With approximately 700 permitted establishments of which approximately 450 are food establishments the City of Chesapeake continues to evolve and expand especially in our growth areas of Greenbrier, Great Bridge, Deep Creek and Western Branch. Our department permits between 20-40 new food establishments yearly. Field inspectors are responsible for specific geographic areas in Chesapeake. The staffing for this Department includes an Environmental Health Manager, an Environmental Health Supervisor, ten Environmental Health Specialists Senior and two Office Service Specialists. A risk assessment, which incorporates among other things the size and complexity of the establishment is utilized to determine the inspection frequency of a food establishment.
