Birth and Death Data
Data Source: Vital records (including birth and death) data are gathered from the Vital Event Statistics Program at the Virginia Department of Health. Live births are reported by the Virginia city or county where the mother normally resided at the time of birth, regardless of where the birth occurred. Pregnancies are reported by the Virginia city or county where the mother normally resided. Infant deaths are reported by the Virginia city or county where the infant resided at the time of death, regardless of where the death occurred. Learn more about birth and death certificate data at the National Center for Health Statistics website.
Population Estimates: Population estimates are derived from the Single-race Population Estimates, United States July 1st resident population by state, county, age, sex, single-race, and Hispanic origin, on CDC WONDER Online Database
Indicator Definitions:
- Infant mortality rate: A death of an infant up to one year of life, and can be due to any cause, per 1,000 live births.
- Late or no prenatal care: Live births where there was no prenatal care or prenatal care that started during the 3rd Trimester.
- Low Birthweight: Live births weighing less than 2,500 grams or 5.5lbs.
- Maternal smoking: Live births where the mother reported tobacco use/smoking cigarettes during pregnancy.

Ethnicity and Race: Only two ethnic classes are recognized in the data, Hispanic and Non-Hispanic, where the term Hispanic refers to persons who can trace their ancestry in some degree to the peoples of the Iberian Peninsula and the nations of Portugal and Spain. The term Latino is also used for Hispanic. Thus, a Hispanic person may be of any race. Presented race categories are based on the race methods and categories set forth by the U.S. Census Populations with Single Race Categories. The race is reported as race of the decedent at death.
