EMD Mandate Rumors Unfounded

The Virginia Office of EMS has been asked about a mandate for all PSAP’s and emergency dispatch centers to employ Emergency Medical Dispatch protocol’s by 2013. There has been NO mandate issued by the Va. Dept. of Health or the Office of EMS. No agency in the Commonwealth of Virginia has the authority to make such a mandate. For this to be true, it would have to be new legislation approved by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor.

The Virginia Office of EMS STRONGLY ENCOURAGES all PSAP’s and emergency dispatch centers in Virginia to employ an approved EMD program and become an OEMS accredited dispatch center. Details on this and EMD in general (including grant opportunities) may be found at the OEMS PSAP website.
