EMS is mandated by the Code of Virginia § 32.1-111.3 to establish a “statewide air medical evacuation system.” In Virginia, we commonly use the term “Medevac” when referring to our air medical evacuation system and/or licensed EMS agencies that provide air medical services.
The terms air medical services (AMS), helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS), and other terms are commonly used by other states and national organizations to describe their systems or agencies. The State Medevac Committee is a standing committee of the EMS Advisory Board. The role of the EMS Advisory Board and its standing sub committees, like the Medevac Committee is to provide advice and counsel regarding methods and procedures for planning, developing, and maintaining a statewide emergency medical services (EMS) system to the OEMS and the State Board of Health.
