Vaccine Administration by Certain EMS Personnel
Per Code of Virginia 54.1-3408 an EMS provider who holds an Advanced Life Support (AEMT – EMT-I – EMT-P) level certification can administer vaccines with the exception of flu vaccines to minors; which is limited by Code of Virginia to EMT-I or Paramedic only.
The Scope of Practice document will be updated at the next MDC and State Advisory Board meeting to reflect the Code of Virginia changes. The Code of Virginia prevails over the Scope of Practice document; therefore Advanced EMT’s can administer vaccines in advance of the Scope of Practice document being updated.
