This full-day, highly interactive, hands-on workshop is designed for the novice to journeyman instructor who desires to learn the successes and pitfalls of utilizing live human patient simulation as a teaching tool. Participants will learn and apply evidence based practices as they collaborate in small groups to design, choreograph and critique the use of live human patient simulations.

HandOPE-4004 Field Operations for Medical Directors

Target Audience: MD/OD

This course is a "hands on" opportunity for EMS physicians to be introduced to fire/rescue field operations, including fireground, hazardous materials and rescue operations. Protective gear ( e.g. turn-out gear) and equipment will be available. Participants should bring their own personal protective gear such as gloves and eye protections; participants can bring their own turn-out gear if desired. Participants should be prepared for a physically active, outdoor experience and dress accordingly in terms of footwear, gloves, and clothing appropriate for temperature and rain if expected. The focus is on exposure to field operations and education, and the course is not designed to be a strenuous, "boot camp" type experience.

ADM-105 Getting Started with VPHIB's State Bridge [REPEAT]

This class is focused on teaching members of EMS agencies to serve as their agency's system administrator. OEMS recommends each agency have more than one VPHIB administrator. Whether learning for the first time, or taking existing skills to the next level, this course will teach the basics for setting up and maintaining their agency in the VPHIB system. Students will learn how to perform the minimum functions required by OEMS and more. Students will also be exposed to the many optional functions that State Bridge offers to agencies such as tracking staff, training records management, performance improvements tools, communication tools, how to make a report from data submitted and more.

BombMED-3006 Spice - Not the One in Your Cupboard

Spice, or synthetic cannabis, is more popular as a drug of choice by American teenagers for a "legal high." It has been banned in 15 states. Routine blood drug screens will not detect its use. In states where Spice is legal, it is sold in tobacco shops and gas stations. Because it can be bought over the counter, more teenagers are using it without realizing the potential untoward effects. The presentation will discuss the history, presentation, when to suspect Spice use and the management of patients who have consumed Spice. Current hot topics on street drug use will also be discussed.

MED-3008 Austere Medical Care - A Surgeon's Experience in Haiti

On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Haiti significantly damaging entire areas of the country and creating over 300,000 injured persons. The devastation, along with the sheer number of injuries and fatalities, redefined the term "austere medical care". This session will present the experiences of one trauma surgeon that responded to Haiti early in the rescue response and look at specific issues to providing care in such an environment to include medical standards of care, logistical issues, safety and security issues, and the psychological impact on the responders.

The phrase "Scene safety…BSI" has been uttered by every EMS provider since the very first course they attended. It assumes that providers will not enter a scene that is unsafe but since responders are still being injured or killed it has not served us well. The term and better yet philosophy of "Situational Awareness" takes into account that real-life scenes are dynamic and have the potential for rapid deterioration. This case-based presentation will discuss a philosophy that has been used in the aeromedical and law enforcement industries for years that emphasizes continuous scene assessment and forethought of their safety.

TRA-7007 Skydiving Related Injuries - It's Not the Fall That Kills!

There are an estimated 29 to 33 deaths related to skydiving every year. However, injuries are harder to estimate because not everyone reports them and there is no clear classification on what constitutes an injury. The United States Parachute Association reported there were 962 skydiving related injuries in 2005. This presentation will review three specific case studies involving skydive related accidents and the common injuries associated. We will examine the ethical dilemma and unique challenges to patient care with air transport crews in this patient population.

This class enables first responders to understand differences between radiological and nuclear emergencies and how to initiate safe operations. Safe/unsafe radiation exposure levels and signs/symptoms of acute overdoses of radiation will be explained. "Dirty" radiological bombs are discussed. Understanding the radiological / nuclear world can give first responders the knowledge to mitigate these incidents safely. We will use radiological detection equipment from local Haz Mat and MMRS.

HandCAR-510 Ambulatory Ventricular Assist Device Workshop

Every year approximately 20 million people worldwide suffer from heart failure. In many cases a heart transplant is the best chance for survival. Unfortunately only 2500 donor hearts are available each year. This leaves many patients with little hope for survival. Major advancements have occurred over the past several years. Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD) are now able to prolong life until a transplant is available or possibly indefinitely. This session will allow the advanced emergency medical responder practical hands-on experience with most of the VADS currently used in the United States.

As we see a steady rise in the number of elderly in our population, the incidence of geriatric trauma also continues to rise. This course will also identify the most common complications associated with traumatic injuries in the geriatric population.
