Local first responders interested in training opportunities for radiological accidents may contact their local emergency management or the Virginia Department Emergency Management (VDEM) for availability of training courses.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) also have several on line self study courses:

FEMA offers other courses at several of their training facilities at the National Fire Training Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland and the Noble Training Center in Ft. McClellan, Alabama.

The US Department of Transportation has an excellent training manual for transportation regulations for radioactive materials:

Radioactive Materials Regulation Review (1.3 MB)

The Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, Inc. have also issued a Handbook for Responding to a Radiololgical Dispersal Device (4.25MB).

Local first responders located in the risk jurisdictions of either nuclear power station are provided training prior to each evaluated exercise through a collaborative effort of VDH, VDEM, and Dominion Power. Check with your local emergency management director for a schedule of training activities if you are assigned to respond to nuclear power plant incidents.
